Although often thought to be a completely McCartney tune, Yellow Submarine was actually a classic Lennon–McCartney collaboration. As heard in a 1967 interview: John: "Yeah, I seem to remember, like, the submarine... the chorus bit, you coming in with it." Paul: "Yeah." John: "And wasn't the other bit something that I had already going, and we put them together?" Paul: "Well, yeah. Right. Yeah." John: "And it made sense to make it into... with Ringo in mind." As heard in an early demo released in the Revolver box set, John wrote the melody to the verse, with Paul coming in with the chorus. Although John gives Paul most of the credit lyrically—saying in 1980, “Paul’s baby. Donovan helped with the lyrics. I helped with the lyrics too… Paul’s idea, Paul’s title – so I count it as a Paul song… written for Ringo.” The song was brought into the studio on May 26th, 1966. Four takes of the basic track were recorded, with Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, John on acoustic guitar, and George on tambourine—all recorded onto track 1. Ringo then recorded his lead vocal, with Paul, John, and George providing backing vocals during the choruses. The tape speed was slowed down for these vocals, changing the song’s key from G major to F-sharp major. They then doubled the chorus harmonies. After combining all vocals onto track 2, John recorded some final lines echoing Ringo’s vocals during the third verse. Then on June 1st, 1966, the majority of the sound effects were recorded. This session had a party atmosphere, with all sorts of silly stories—including John wanting to record an underwater vocal. So Mal Evans got a condom, which he then put around the mic. Although this didn’t work in the end, Lennon’s voice was instead fed through his guitar amp. There are a lot of stories I can’t really fit here, so if you want to read more, I recommend the Beatles E-Book article: beatlesebooks.com/yellow-submarine. A list of people who were there that day included George, Paul, John, Ringo, Mal Evans, Pattie Harrison, EMI staff including John Skinner and Terry Condon, Brian Jones and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, and Marianne Faithfull. Although Paul had an idea of including a brass band, there wasn’t enough time to book one, so George Martin, along with Geoff Emerick and Phil McDonald, took an excerpt from Le Rêve Passé, which was then slowed down and pitch-matched. One of the final overdubs included Mal Evans banging a bass drum, with people following behind him singing the last chorus. With that, the song was complete.
