Music (starts 3:30): Robert Schumann Soiréestücke Op. 73, 1st mvt - Zart und mit Ausdruck. This is the original version of Schumann's well-known Fantasiestücke Op. 73 for clarinet and piano. Schumann used the title 'Soiréestücke' on his original manuscript, and it was later changed to 'Fantasiestücke' or 'Fantasy Pieces' when it was published. This version of the Fantasiestücke has lots of differences with the one we know, including different notes in the clarinet part and most noticeably, a big repeat in the first movement! It is published by Faber as Soiréestücke Op. 73 (edited by Alan Hacker and Richard Platt). For Historical Clarinet Diaries #4, I wanted to record this movement on a historical clarinet similar to the one used by Johann Gottlieb Kotte (1797-1857), for whom Schumann almost certainly wrote the piece. Kotte used a clarinet by the Dresden maker Carl Gottlob Bormann, with only one or two more keys than my instrument, which is copied from the famous Dresden maker Grenser. It seems likely that Kotte was still using this rather old-fashioned instrument in 1849, when Schumann wrote the Soiréestücke/Fantasiestücke. If you are interested in reading more about Schumann, Kotte and Bormann, check out the article by Benjamin Reissenberger and Eric Hoeprich, in the journal Early Music vol. 42 (2014), pp.449-459. Boxwood & Brass clarinetist Emily Worthington is challenging herself to record a piece of unusual repertoire on a difference clarinet every week!
