Like everyone else, Dev is tired of Abzan and Jeskai, and so with the release of Oath of the Gatewatch, he's been testing all kinds of brand-new decks! Mono-Black Control is a deck that's been generating some buzz on the channel lately, and it's a budget deck that I have a lot of confidence in. There are a few good reasons to build this deck: 1. It's only about $50-$75 on TCGPlayer 2. Only one main-deck piece rotates when Shadows over Innistrad comes out in April 3. It can be easily modded to become a killer by adding Jace, Tasigur, Painful Truths, Den Protecter, etc. 4. It runs 20 main-deck removal pieces 5. It's not the same deck you've been playing for 6 months 6. No one will be prepared for it! Some of these choices, especially the creatures, may seem wacky, but please watch the video for an explanation as to why we're playing what appear to be some pretty janky cards. There's a reason for everything. Creatures (9) 4 Bearer of Silence 2 Kalitas 2 Inverter of Truths 1 Risen Executioner Planeswalkers (2) 2 Ob Nixilis Spells (23) 4 Duress 4 Grasp of Darkness 1 Ultimate Price 2 Ruinous Path 4 Read the Bones 3 Murderous Cut 4 Remorseless Punishment 1 Dark Petition Lands (26) 2 Blighted Fen 4 Evolving Wilds 1 Mage-Ring Network 1 Mirrorpool 1 Sea Gate Wreckage 1 Mortuary Mire 1 Wastes 15 Swamp Sideboard (15) 2 Despise 2 Self-Inflicted Wound 1 Ultimate Price 2 Warping Wail 3 Flaying Tendrils 2 Infinite Obliteration 1 Languish 1 Murderous Cut 1 Crux of Fate Some quick explanations: 1. Risen Executioner has awesome synergy with Kalitas. Sac the Executioner, buff the Kalitas, return the Executioner, rinse, repeat. 2. Bearer of Silence is hot because we have somewhat poor game against other control decks (especially Esper Dragons), and against those decks, we don't even have to resolve Bearer (he makes them sac a guy when he's CAST) for him to be effective. He's even fairly effective against aggro and midrange decks. 3. Inverter of Truth can turn all of the incredible removal we've played over the course of the game into a surrogate library, and it's especially good in multiples. Play an Inverter while you have one in the yard, and the one in your graveyard will become one of just a few card sin your library. This allows you to essentially loop them, all while constantly recycling key cards. 4. Remorseless Punishment is amazing. Mtg: Budget Mono-Black Control in Oath of the Gatewatch Standard!
