Demonstrators chanting and brandishing weapons STORYLINE: The destruction of the dome of a revered Shiite shrine sent crowds of angry Shiites into the streets in cities across Iraq on Thursday as the nation braced itself for a wave of sectarian violence. No group has admitted responsibility for Wednesday's attack on the 1,200-year-old Askariya shrine in Samarra, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad, but suspicion fell on Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. In a show of unity though, more than thirty-thousand Shiite and Sunni Muslims demonstrated together in the Shiite city of Kut, 190 kilometres (118 miles) south of Baghdad. Both Shiite and Sunni leaders took turns to address the crowds, warning them that Iraq could fall deeper into sectarian violence. Angry crowds denounced the attack and chanted anti-American slogans.
