Why Did Everyone Leave This Mountain Town In West Virginia? Amtrak Train Coming & Going But Nobody Gets On Or Off. Worlds Biggest Coal Trains With Extra Locomotives Working Hard. Old Train Station, Abandoned Homes & Coaling Tower. Thurmond, West Virginia Is Now Owned By The National Park Service With Ex Chesapeake & Ohio Railway ( C&O ) Tracks Right On Main Street. Close look at the town of Thurmond, West Virginia, population 5. We see 4 freight trains and 1 Amtrak passenger train. We also look inside the train station, inside an abandoned railroad office and inside a 1922 steam locomotive coaling tower. This is an old railroad town that was built in 1884. The C&O railroad was completed here in 1873. The giant concrete coaling tower was used for refuelling steam locomotives with coal. Coal does still pass through here on a daily basis. However, the last steam locomotive used in freight service passed through here in 1958. The coaling tower has been abandoned ever since. I did not expect for the coal trains to be over 200 cars long. I underestimated how much coal they are carrying. They are probably carrying nearly 20,000 tons each. I rode here with Scott, 1960gambit and we spent the night in nearby Beckley, West Virginia. This video shows our first day here. There will be a Part 2 for the second day. Thurmond gets a little over a half dozen freight trains a day, mostly coal, and Amtrak makes 3 weekly round trips. Amtrak averages about 1 or 2 people per train either getting on or off the train here. While we were here only one Amtrak train passed through and as you will see in the video nobody got on or off the train. RJ Corman Railroad also has a spur that ties into CSX in Thurmond. The line goes to a coal load out in Pax, West Virginia. On this day the spur did not operate. In Part 2 you will see a big RJ Corman loaded coal train come off the spur with two locomotives on the rear that will return back up the line. Part 2 will be out soon.
