Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary | Why It’s Closed Most of the Year & Why It Matters | Mount Pleasant SC Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary is one of Charleston Harbor’s most extraordinary and protected coastal treasures. Located just off Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, Crab Bank is a designated Heritage Preserve and Important Bird Area that plays a critical role in protecting thousands of nesting seabirds each year. Once a natural sandbar, the island was nearly lost after Hurricane Irma in 2017, but a major restoration project in 2021 rebuilt over 32 acres of vital nesting habitat using dredged sand from the Charleston Harbor deepening project. Today, Crab Bank is home to thriving colonies of black skimmers, royal terns, brown pelicans, American oystercatchers, and migratory shorebirds, making it one of the most ecologically important seabird sanctuaries in South Carolina. 🪶 Why is Crab Bank closed most of the year? To protect fragile nesting colonies, the island is fully closed to public access from March 15 through October 15. During this critical breeding season, even minor disturbances can cause nesting birds to abandon eggs and chicks. From October 16 through March 14, limited access is allowed only within the intertidal zone, while all digging, fossil collecting, dogs, and camping remain prohibited year-round. These protections ensure Crab Bank continues to serve as a safe haven for coastal and migratory birds while preserving one of Charleston’s most remarkable natural environments. Whether you’re a local, relocating to the Lowcountry, or simply love Charleston’s coastal lifestyle, this sanctuary is a powerful reminder of what makes our waterways so special. When those small windows of opportunity present themselves, you will see boaters and kayakers flock to the preserve to search for fossils and sharks teeth at low tide. Remember that dogs are not allowed and low tide is the only designated time to visit the preserve. 👉 Is your love of salt life fueling your plan to relocate to Mount Pleasant, Charleston, or the Lowcountry? 📞 Let’s connect!
