Welcome to Part 3 of my 4-part watercolour series dedicated to the beautiful fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire Coast. In this episode, we move away from the open waves and focus on the quiet river estuary (Roxby Beck) that runs through the village into the harbour. Our subject is a resting fishing boat sitting in the calm, shallow waters of the tidal creek. What you will master in this Estuary tutorial: Shallow Water Reflections: How to paint the soft, elongated reflections found in calm estuary water (different from ocean waves!). Mud & Sand Textures: Capturing the colours of the tidal riverbed and the wet mud banks. Boat Anatomy: Sketching and painting the hull of the boat as it sits low in the calm water. Village Backdrop: hinting at the Staithes cottages and harbour walls in the background without overpowering the boat. My Palette Colours: Cadmium Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green and Neutral Tint. The Paper I use: Fabriano Artistico, 300lb (640 GSM).
