(6 Jul 2021) LEAD IN: The closure of international borders in Israel to stem the spread of the coronavirus and the recent violence have devastated tourism in Jerusalem's Old City. STORY-LINE: Shops in Jerusalem's Old City are mostly empty nowadays. The recent violence and the closure of international borders due to the coronavirus pandemic has left tourism in the holy city in a dire state. Palestinian-owned souvenir shops in the Old City say that the ongoing absence of tourists during the typically busy summer season is hurting business. They say few Jewish Israelis are coming to shop in the Old City in the aftermath of widespread unrest in east Jerusalem and the war between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip in May. Shopkeepers believe the recent violence has left potential customers fearful and reluctant to visit their stores. Jerusalem's Old City relies heavily on tourism. Millions of tourists visited the walled city, home to sites holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians, each year before the outbreak of the pandemic. Israel captured east Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites, in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed it, a move not recognized by most of the international community. It considers the entire city its capital, while the Palestinians want east Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state. The competing claims over east Jerusalem, home to Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy sites, lie at the heart of the conflict and have sparked many rounds of violence. The Israeli government had planned to open the country up to individual foreign tourists in July, but a rise in COVID-19 infections caused by the new delta variant has delayed the return of foreign tourism.
