In the 1930s the regions around major towns and cities were suburbanised and local rail travel was an important part of this trend. Local trains, taking people to where they worked, were as important to the railway companies as more eye-catching express services. This Pendon model shows a typical local service working between Oxford and Reading in the summer of 1935. A train of four coaches. It is formed of non-corridor stock of a style that was typical of shorter-range services, where the space normally taken by a corridor could be better used to increase passenger capacity. The GWR normally arranged local trains into fixed formations with a Van Third at each end, but our train is unusual as what appears to be a three-coach set is augmented with a Third class coach at the rear.
