00:00 - Race 1 22:54 - Race 2 This weekend was the fifth weekend of the PWC 2020 season by Phoenix Racing Club. We raced a sprint race and feature race at the one and only Autodromo Nazionale Monza. I got pole position and placed P2 (P3 after a post-race 5 second penalty for blocking) in the first race and P1 in the second race. It's impossible not to talk about this weekend without talking about DRS. As Monza is basically a straight track with a few braking zones here and there, both the DRS and the slipstream from someone else could be combined to give another car nearly one second in pace advantage to pass the car ahead. As a result, there was really no way to try to find any more pace on someone, since they could easily just catch you up at the push of a button, negating any time gain you could've made in a corner. The only way to guarantee a win would be to patiently follow someone until the closing laps of the race, making sure that you were still behind and got DRS on the very last lap, and then passing them before the finish line. I wasn't super enthused about this race, especially with the poor weekend I had on the last track where DRS was a huge factor - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Still, it was time to put what I'd learned from that weekend to use. This time, I not only made sure to not run too little wing, I compensated for the reduced downforce by significantly softening the suspension to maintain the same amount of grip at the wheels. In any case, I knew that there wouldn't be much of a pace advantage if any at all, and I resolved to think about this weekend only as a chance to bring home points so I could do better on the later, "proper" circuits. I managed to outqualify my teammate Photon by 0.013 of a second, starting me on pole in the first race, followed by Photon and Gunciz. But being in front was a disadvantage, as they could use the aforementioned strategy to beat me on the last lap. I would have to play some sort of game to try to get DRS instead of them. The start was okay, and just like predicted the first half of the race was a procession. Photon passed me using DRS in the middle of the race, but then sure enough, several laps later braked on the straight to let me past. At this point, Gunciz was hot on our heels, and I was worried that trying to do the same thing would make me drop two places instead of one. On the third to last lap, I had to try something. I slowed in the Ascari chicane and braked after we got onto the straight. Momentarily I backed Photon into Gunciz and thought I might be able to try to get away. However, they stayed right on my tail. On the second to last lap, I did the same but slowed even more on the straight, and both Photon and Gunciz were let past. The final lap was total chaos, but Gunciz was sacrificed to be in front as both Photon and I got DRS. I had to use DRS to overtake Gunciz, but since Photon also had DRS, I couldn't overtake him on the last straight, and the finishing order was Photon, me, and Gunciz. The longer feature race was more muddy in terms of strategy, mainly because of the pit stop and the limited DRS usages meaning that you could only use it on about half of the laps. Still, an okay start and a bit of luck meant that Gunciz was dropped out of DRS range, leading only me and Photon vying for the win. I had planned to use DRS to get as close as possible around midway through the race, then try to undercut Photon with the pitstop to hopefully create a three second gap - larger than the DRS range. I didn't have high hopes for having to execute something so perfectly, and if I undercut ahead but didn't create a large enough gap Photon could just wait until the last lap to pass me. I waited too long to undercut Photon, and had to do the opposite when Photon dived into the pits ahead of me. I managed to gain a decent gap ahead of Photon somehow with a good pitstop and a reasonable overcut lap. However, the gap wasn't nearly enough to keep him out of my DRS, and I thought I'd have to either just let him win, or try some other BS to try to get him in front of me before the last lap. My tires warmed up quickly though, and after a few laps I realized my pace was almost matching my first stint pace when I was using DRS behind Photon. I kept driving fast laps, each one almost the same as the other. Photon either waited too long to try to close the gap or wasn't using DRS enough, but either way it came down to the closing minutes of the race, when Photon made a mistake and dropped out of DRS range, leading me to win--somehow. Unfortunately the race wasn't broadcasted this round, despite so many things happening. If you're reading this, thanks for bothering to read my "race blog" lol. I somehow managed good results in such a toss-up weekend, and I can't wait for the more "straightforward" circuits in the season and to keep improving. Thanks to everyone who raced, and thanks to Phoenix Racing Club for hosting the championship!
