Preserving a landmark. Promoting a legacy of healing. A medical shelter built during segregation is being restored and will continue to serve the African American community. Dr. Edward E. McClaren built the clinic next door to his home and treated families at all hours of the day and night. It closed in 1954 and was recently in danger of being demolished. The City of Greenville worked with neighborhood advocates and a developer to move the building and retain this important piece of history. NOW Urban League of the Upstate has announced plans for a wellness center in the former clinic. Dr. McClaren's grandsons travelled from out of state to attend the ceremony. Loren Thomas talked with them about their grandfather's lasting impact.
