The Vedāntic Morning Prayer for Nididhyasanam. In this talk, we explore Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's profound Prātaḥ Smarāmi Stotram—a masterful composition for nididhyāsanam (contemplative meditation) based on the brilliant talk by Swami Paramarthanandaji. Dr. Thimappa Hegde and Dr. Anupama discuss the meaning and significance of each word, revealing why this prayer must be chanted and remembered every morning to recollect the essence of Vedānta and reorient our identity from limitation to limitlessness. Core Message of the Stotram: We are not the limited body-mind complex (sthūla-sūkṣma-śarīra). We are the limitless Ātmā, the witnessing consciousness that enlivens the body and is present through all three states: waking, dream, and deep sleep. Our true nature is Brahman—Sat-Cit-Ānanda (Existence-Consciousness-Bliss). Key Teachings Recollected: I am the Basis, Not the Content: As Ātmā, I enliven this body and project this world. The world and time are in me; I am not in them. My true nature is inaccessible to the mind or speech, yet it is because of me that the mind and speech function. The Sole Means: The only way to understand this truth is through the grace of a Guru and the teachings of Śāstra (scripture). The Technique of Negation (Neti Neti): This prayer applies the fundamental Vedāntic method. We negate everything we can experience—the body, senses, mind, emotions, and even the world—as "not me" (neti neti). We affirm we have no attributes (nirguṇa). Through this, it dawns that we are beyond birth and death. The Final Identity: We are that Puruṣottama (the Supreme Being), both immanent in the body and all-pervading. We are unaffected by ignorance (tamas) and have attained the eternal goal (Sanātana Padam), from which there is no return to saṃsāra. The World is a Projection: To the untaught, this entire world appears real, like a snake superimposed on a rope. This prayer helps us see the "rope" of consciousness behind the appearance. The Objective & Benefit: The primary aim of this stotram is to revise the message of Vedānta daily. It is an act of counting our blessings and cultivating gratitude towards our Guru and the Śāstra. When this knowledge becomes firm, you engage in life like an actor on a stage—there may be issues to work on, but no fundamental problems to lament. This is truly one of the greatest prayers for Vedāntic meditation. Regular chanting itself prepares the mind, and as the teachings affirm, such sincere practice invokes the grace whereby a Guru will come to make the teaching clear, leading you to pūrṇatva (complete fulfillment).
