Did I quit my full-time job to pursure indie game dev? Well its almost a little combination of both. Six months ago, I left my stable, high-paying job as a Technical Program Manager at Google Cloud to join Stash, a gaming startup helping devs go direct-to-consumer. On paper, it sounds crazy—I gave up private chefs, massages, and job security for the chaos of a startup. But I was stagnating. I wanted a challenge, to make an impact, and to push myself beyond just being another cog in a massive machine. So, what’s the reality of working at a startup? It’s busy. Some days I’m deep in work, others I’m juggling ten meetings and firefighting across teams. My role is dynamic—I handle project execution, work with engineers, review designs, do QA, and even build dashboards. Unlike Google, where roles are more defined, at a startup, you wear a lot of hats. Stash is fully remote, which I thought would be isolating, but the fast pace keeps me engaged. Plus, we do quarterly offsites—last time, we went to Iceland, which was an incredible reset. Compared to big tech, my work matters more, but that also means work-life balance takes a hit. I also worry about money more now, especially after moving to NYC, but I don’t regret the decision. Bonus perk: As a game dev myself, working with major studios has been eye-opening. I’ll be at GDC next month—excited to dive deeper into the industry!
