ACHS Webinar Series - How to Avoid Human-Made Pandemics

In this webinar, "How to Avoid Human-Made Pandemics" held on 23 January 2025 Dr Filippa Lentzos discussed the critical need for stringent oversight in pathogen research, particularly in laboratories and among researchers working with increasingly number of pathogens. She referenced the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Risks Report 2025, which points to the increasing risks associated with AI-driven biotech, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Guidance Framework for the Responsible Use of Life Sciences. These reports stress the importance of ethical governance and managing biorisks to protect public safety. The session also explored Dr Lentzos' project, “A Framework for Tomorrow’s Pathogen Research,” highlighting key recommendations for conducting research with pandemic risks in a safe, secure, and responsible manner.
