This video is for anyone who is learning German and interested in getting to the C2 exam or who has already passed the C2 exam and wants to hear about the experiences of someone else who has complete the exam. In this video I talk about my experience after passing the GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom) and what I noticed was different once I had completed the final German language exam. After passing the exam, I studied in Germany for my masters. I was the only non-native German speaker in my class and that was the atmosphere that I was going for. Before moving to Germany again, I was at the stage of, I am having conversations and I like this but it’s about every day stuff, now I want to take it one step further and actually study through the German language. Since passing the C2 exam, my German has continued to get better. I think the exams are great for having a benchmark to continually get better but once you have done the C2 exam, it’s kind of cool because you have worked towards this big goal and in a way it was the end goal. Then when you pass it, you realise that you can keep going and pretty much choose the topics which you would like to be able to speak or write or read about better. I was interested in speaking more and more like a native, so I kept trying to just fit in and speak like a normal student at university. At this point as well, you’ll probably enjoy being in a multi-lingual environment because you can help others understand what’s going on. It’s quite a cool feeling and is most likely quite easy for you in comparison to others. Since passing the exam, I have continued to integrate German into my life. After graduating, I worked in a company where the whole team only ever spoke German and I rarely used English. English was always seen as a benefit though so that definitely worked in my favour. At this point, I want to maintain my German and continue to experience more about the German culture. As a bonus, getting to this point has made me think about my own culture a lot too. It is really cool to be able to compare both cultures and start to understand why things work one way in one culture versus the other.
