We're in the cloud forest of Costa Rica, in San Gerardo de Dota, where we're staying at the Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge. With its private nature reserve, the Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge is the perfect base for hiking in the cloud forest and for observing the mythical resplendent quetzal. The Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge is a stylish eco-boutique hotel that prioritizes sustainability and harmony with its surroundings. It enjoys a tranquil location at an altitude of 2600 m (8530 ft) in the cloud forest. Twelve bungalows are spread across the lodge's expansive grounds, offering maximum privacy. However, the distance between the bungalows and the main building is considerable, requiring a good level of fitness. All bungalows feature wide, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and a private terrace, providing amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the cloud forest. Our bungalow is a comfortable "Superior Bungalow". The furnishings are modern, combining with plenty of wood, and include amenities such as a coffee maker, Wi-Fi, and even a Jacuzzi. Latin American artworks add colorful accents to the walls. A cozy ethanol fireplace provides comforting warmth and a romantic atmosphere in the evenings. The light-filled hotel restaurant, "Le Tapir" delights guests with excellent cuisine, often using ingredients from the hotel's own herb garden. The adjacent art gallery showcases and sells Latin American art. The lodge's expansive private nature reserve, accessible only to hotel guests, is truly beautiful. The area borders directly on Los Quetzales National Park. 5 km (3,1 mi) of hiking trails wind through various sections of forest. The trails are well-maintained, but due to the hilly terrain, some sections involve steep ascents and descents, requiring a certain level of fitness – but the effort is well worth it! We hike along a narrow path through an enchanting forest with ancient, moss-covered trees and an abundance of bromeliads, descending into the valley of the Quebrada Ojo de Agua mountain stream. Apart from us, there's no one else around; we experience the silence of the cloud forest and even spot a few native birds. But the real reason we're here is the resplendent quetzal. San Gerardo de Dota is one of the best regions in the world to observe this legendary bird in its natural habitat. Our quetzal tour starts at dawn, as this is the best time to spot the elusive bird. It's cold, so we put on our warmest clothes. An experienced lodge guide accompanies us. His trained eye and powerful telescope are essential for spotting the magnificent bird with its emerald-green plumage and long, impressive tail feathers in the treetops. The success rate for seeing the quetzal in this region is reportedly over 95%, and we, too, see several of these beautiful birds. For the Maya and Aztecs, the quetzal was sacred, and its long tail feathers adorned the crowns of their priests and kings. The approximately two-hour tour is a highlight of our Costa Rica trip and definitely worth getting up early for. Afterwards, we enjoy a good breakfast at the lodge before continuing on to our next destination. What we liked: The fantastic bungalows with their large panoramic windows and plenty of privacy The quetzal tour The beautiful hiking trails on the hotel grounds The truly excellent hotel restaurant, "Le Tapir" What we liked less: The paths to the bungalows can be several hundred meters long and are strenuous. If you're not very mobile, the hotel is less suitable. It gets cold at night due to the altitude, and the bungalow floor could have been better insulated. Our conclusion: A comfortable and beautiful hotel in nature and an ideal starting point for quetzal watching.
