While the Companion 20 is very compact it may lack a little low end in some use scenarios. Overall I got excellent results from this pair of speakers which I bought first in 2012 while studying overseas. After retiring home to Europe, I did move into a bigger room, where my desk is free-standing in the room as opposed to put up against a wall. I think smaller rooms, or putting the Companion 20 near the wall yielded the best results. But even in my new place, the speakers are very nice to use, the sound is very pleasant. Testing the new Companion 50 I found that they have considerably more low end due to the big Acoustimass module. Something bigger rooms may benefit from. Subjectively, I found the sound of the bigger Companion 50 appeared to me as more processed, while the Companion 20 sounded somewhat different, maybe more neutral and centered in the mids. In contrast, the bigger 50 had more emphasis on the highs and the lows. If you have a chance to listen before purchasing at a store, or maybe if a friend or relative owns a pair that would give you the best impression. One thing I did not like about the 50 is the white noise/static, my old 20 are completely quite, so why do the 50 make this wired hissing sound, I am clueless. For some people, it may be no issue at all, but since I am used to the smaller Companion 20 being quiet when I work on the computer, I found that to be irritating.
