Episode 57 of the Pioneers in Aged Care Podcast featuring Alissa Walsh, Chief Performance Officer at Apollo Care Alliance is LIVE! Recorded a couple of months ago, Alissa sits down to share the unique and disruptive approach Apollo Care is taking to reform the aged care sector across Australia. Alissa introduces Apollo Care as a private company dedicated to acquiring and bringing not-for-profit homes, often in regional and remote Australia, into its alliance. This clever structure allows them to raise capital while preserving the local identity and salary packaging benefits that their staff value. With 13 homes already under the banner and a 14th acquisition—a new home in Queensland—just announced, Apollo Care's model is quickly proving to be a viable and necessary option for facilities facing distress. With a career spanning over 15 years in human services and aged care, Alissa's background is compelling. Originally starting out as a government lawyer in international and migration law, she found her passion for human services after moving back to her hometown to be closer to family. She transitioned into the disability sector, before entering residential aged care eight years ago. Known by CEO Stephen Becsi as a "rising star," Alissa’s ability to find the 'yes' in any challenge has been central to her success. As Chief Performance Officer, Alissa discusses the unique benefits of working for Apollo Care, where the Residential Services Manager (RSM) is revered as the "chief executive of their community," enjoying more autonomy than in traditional models. She shares key operational successes, including developing the Operations Insight Suite (an online platform for real-time data) and achieving a drastic reduction in agency staff—from nearly 30% down to closer to 5%—a change that is financially beneficial and, more importantly, provides better quality outcomes for residents through stable, permanent teams. This episode is a must-listen for understanding how strategic structure, operational insight, and a focus on local identity are pioneering a new era of sustainable, high-quality care.
