In the latest leg of our journey we have arrived in Morocco and spent 2 incredible weeks hopping thru a land of unforgettable landscapes. Our journey began with a ferry trip and a stormy night in Tangier — the gateway between Europe & Africa. From there, we wound our way into the Rif Mountains and stepped into the Blue City of Chefchaouen… a maze of painted walls and narrow alleys that felt very calming. Next: Fes - much less calming with its chaotic medina (historic old town) full of history and pushy vendors (sometimes deceptive) all working hard to make a sale, offer directions or find us accommodation. We took away sights, sounds and smells we’ll never forget - especially the ancient tannery that’s still in use, and smells like my worst socks on a bad day. We then happily traded city streets for the silence of the Sahara, where In Merzouga we uncomfortably rode camels across towering dunes and watched the sun sink into the endless sand at our desert camp. And then we drove into the Todra and Dades gorge areas — immense canyons carved by water into incredible natural spectacles. We were fortunate enough to share the experience with fellow van lifers — swapping stories over shared meals, and hiking deep into the stunning canyon walls that made us feel very fortunate. This is Morocco part 1 — wild, beautiful, and full of surprises.
