HALEIWA - Hula (Jennie Woodd) Ray Kinney with Dick McIntire’s Harmony Hawaiians Decca, 535A, 1935. “Haleiwa” is the reverse side of “Papalina Lahilahi,” and it was probably for this song that my family purchased the record. The song was written in the 1920s by Jennie Hanaiali’i Woodd, a noted hula dancer, choreographer, and songwriter. It celebrates the resort town of Haleiwa on the north shore of Oahu. This was a place my great-grandparents enjoyed visiting when they lived in Honolulu in the early 1900s. The accompanying pictures are snapshots taken by my grandfather between 1900 and 1904 (except for the few he is in; he is the young man almost smothered by colorful leis in the first picture). The photos show many comings and goings of friends and family, and include a few scenes at Haleiwa. I think Haleiwa had a special meaning for my great-grandfather, especially. In May 1909, at the Haleiwa Hotel, he received a job offer from the head of a San Francisco company, which he gladly accepted. They immediately left for California and a new chapter in their lives. They never returned to the Islands, but after spending more than a dozen years in Honolulu, Hawaii forever held a special place for them in their hearts.
