Since the earliest humans looked up at the night sky, we’ve wondered whether other minds inhabit worlds beyond our own. That age-old question has gained new urgency with the discovery that most stars host their own planetary systems — and that billions of Earth-like planets may exist within our galaxy alone. And our galaxy, of course, is just one of hundreds of billions. Could we really be the only intelligent beings in such a vast cosmos? How can science help us answer this question? And might artificial intelligence be the key to detecting extraterrestrial intelligence? Dr. Steve Croft, Project Scientist for the Breakthrough Listen Initiative, will share the latest developments in the search for intelligent life beyond Earth — including his work using the 7,000-ton Green Bank Telescope, the largest movable object on land, to scan thousands of stars for elusive, needle-in-a-haystack signals from alien technology. Dr. Steve Croft is an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, and Project Scientist for the Breakthrough Listen Initiative, the most comprehensive search for extraterrestrial intelligence ever undertaken. He is also an Adjunct Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute, and a Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. His work spans time-domain astrophysics, radio and optical astronomy, and the development of advanced algorithms for identifying technosignatures. In addition to his research, Dr. Croft is active in science communication and education, engaging audiences around the world with the latest developments in the quest to understand our place in the universe.
