For the Open Air: Calder in Roxbury

In celebration of Alexander Calder's "Mountains" (1976) at the Minor Memorial Library in Roxbury, CT, Susan Braeuer Dam gave a presentation on how Calder's Roxbury property inspired his first works for the outdoors—or "for the open air," in the artist's words. Using historical photographs from the Calder Foundation's archives, she illustrates the watershed moment of the summer of 1934, and highlights the ways in which these early standing mobiles marked a shift in scale and sensibility as part of a vast progression toward the monumental in Calder's sculpture. Dam is the Director of Research and Publications at the Calder Foundation, New York, where she has served as an associate editor on a number of significant projects.
