He is a Tulku in the Sakya lineage - the 1st reincarnation was Lama Tenzin Phuntsok - root guru of Kham Derge region. 2nd was Thartse Shabdrung, one of heart son of Thartse Khenchen Jampa Namkha Chimed. 3rd was elder brother of H.H. 16th Karmapa. The present 4th Dhongtsang Shabdrung Rinpoche was recognized as a tulku at age 9. He entered Ngor Monastery, where he trained intensively in ritual practices at Ngor monastery in Dheradun, India. At age 15, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche personally accepted him into Dzongsar Institute, where he began his studies toward a khenpo degree, which he received in 2005 handed by H.H. Dalai Lama. Thereafter, he helped in the reconstruction of his monastery (Dhongtsang Monastery) in Yushu, Tibet. As H.H. Sakya Trizin and H.E. Luding Khenchen Rinpoche's ordered, he accepted staying and caring for the monks at Sa Ngor Chotsok Monastery located just outside of Gangtok, Sikkim. He has completed all major retreats like Hevajra, Vajrayogini etc. from Sakya lineage and went UC Berkeley in 2013 as an exchange scholar and advising PhD students on their thesis. He is still holding responsibility of both Tibet and monastery at Gangtok Sikkim and preaching Buddha dharma around the world.
