Today I’m sharing one of our most useful (and surprisingly simple) tools for choosing carpet colors — what we call “The White Paper Trick.” Yes, it sounds simple — and that’s the beauty of it. After decades of helping homeowners in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Eagle pick the perfect carpet, we’ve found this trick helps you see color accurately and confidently, whether you’re in our showroom or your own home. 🧠 Why Carpet Colors Can Be So Tricky When you’re staring at a carpet sample surrounded by dozens of others, your eye doesn’t actually isolate one color. It processes all the surrounding shades at once — even if you think you’re focused on one. That means what looks “warm beige” next to a cool gray might look totally different when it’s alone in your room. That’s where the white paper trick comes in. 🧻 How to Do the White Paper Trick 1️⃣ Grab a few sheets of plain white printer paper. 2️⃣ Lay the carpet sample you’re considering on the floor. 3️⃣ Use the paper to block out all the surrounding colors — just frame the one sample you’re evaluating. 4️⃣ Step back 5–10 feet and look again. What happens is amazing — your eye suddenly sees the true undertone of the carpet. Maybe you notice a hint of blue, a warm gold tint, or a subtle green cast you didn’t catch before. This works for every color family and every lighting condition. ☀️ Try It in Your Own Home Lighting changes everything. What looks perfect under showroom lights can appear totally different in your living room at night.
