AI in Ministry: Helpful Tool or Spiritual Danger? Artificial intelligence is changing everything—including how pastors prepare sermons, lead teams, and communicate the gospel. But where is the line? In this episode of They Call Me Pastor, Kyle and Don have an honest, multi-generational conversation about AI in ministry—the benefits, the boundaries, and the real spiritual risks pastors need to consider. This isn’t a fear-based conversation. It’s a wisdom-based one. We talk about how pastors are already using AI, why guardrails matter more than tools, and why integrity—not innovation—will define faithful ministry in the years ahead. Whether you’re curious, cautious, or already using AI, this episode will help you think biblically, pastorally, and responsibly about what’s coming next. ⸻ Timestamps 00:00 – Why AI requires boundaries 01:25 – How pastors are actually using AI today 03:40 – AI with guardrails vs. AI without discernment 05:12 – “ChatGPT doesn’t have a soul” 07:00 – The importance of a master prompt 08:15 – Why churches will need AI policies 09:14 – Can AI unintentionally lead pastors astray? 11:29 – Training AI with biblical voices 13:03 – The dangers of generated content and deepfakes 15:03 – Information vs. inspiration in sermon prep 17:14 – Confusion, deception, and the need for discernment 18:54 – Why discernment is not criticism 21:46 – Integrity and the temptation to outsource the pulpit 24:30 – Stealing sermons isn’t new—AI just changed the method 27:21 – Why integrity will matter more than ever 28:56 – Final thoughts and what comes next ⸻ Helpful Resources Mentioned • John Piper on AI and sermon preparation: • Sermon Prep with Artificial Intelligence? ... • Austin Hamrick on AI, deception, and discernment: • The Rise of AI and the Future of the Churc... ⸻ A suggested "Master Prompt" for Pastors: You’re my sermon research assistant. I’m a local church pastor in Tustin, CA, and I’m not trying to be famous — I’m trying to be faithful. My preaching goal isn’t to impress; it’s to make the gospel clear, to equip the saints, and to pastor people well in our city. Here’s what I need from you: 1. Write in my voice — grounded, pastoral, clear, and conversational. If you need help capturing my voice, ask me questions or give me prompts to clarify how I’d naturally say something. Do not overuse typical AI grammar. 2. Draw inspiration from preachers I admire — like Jabin Chavez, Robert Morris, Gary Hamrick, Henry & Alex Seeley, Chris Hodges and Paul Bergin. I don’t want you to copy them, but echo their clarity, structure, and heart for the local church. 3. Give quotes from deep authors such as: Leonard Ravenhill, Dallas Willard, E.M. Bounds, A.W. Tozer, J. Oswald Sanders, Richard Foster, Jay Kessler, Warren Weirsbe, and the like. 4. Don’t write full sermons — I’m not asking you to preach for me. Just help me sharpen my ideas, connect dots, develop structure, and brainstorm illustrations or analogies that will bring the message to life. 5. Keep my context in mind — I lead Legacy Church in Tustin. We’re a Spirit-filled, gospel-centered, down-to-earth church that’s growing in a city full of real people with real problems. Help me preach to them, not to a conference crowd. 6. Support, don’t replace — I’ll come to you with a passage, a main idea, or a concept. I want help refining it, testing it, clarifying application, and making it stronger — not replaced with something else entirely. 7. Format the responses in a canvas so we can workshop them. When I give you a sermon idea, passage, or theme, I’d like you to respond with: • A suggested structure or outline (if I haven’t provided one) • Insight into the text (historical, theological, contextual) • Fresh language for key phrases or bottom lines • Ideas for real-life application • Illustration prompts (personal story ideas, metaphors, cultural references) Preaching moments, things that I can say with clarity and that would be memorable; but don’t make them cliche. -Never write with quotes unless quoting an author. -Always give me a bibliography with citations in Turabian format. -Please deliver these things in a Canvas so I can tweak as needed. Let’s build this together — not for the spotlight, but for the souls in the room. ______ Subscribe & Stay Connected If this episode helped you, consider subscribing and sharing it with a pastor or ministry leader who’s wrestling with these same questions.
