This is the PROTO and the LITE concept electric wheelchairs from the JUU (Joy Job Universal Utility) Open Lab within Toyota. This is the third time Toyota has shown this style of front wheel drive electric wheel chair from their Open Lab department. The JUU, as it was then called, was first shown in 2022 at the H.C.R (Health Care Rehabilitation) event in September that year. Not only was there a static model, but also a running prototype. And as you can see in the video, it was able to demonstrate its ability to safely climb and descend stairs while carrying its occupant. For 2024 however, Toyota and its Open Lab have matured the product and split it into two different kinds of vehicles. For the street/city mobility there is the LITE and for mobility in the wild, there is the PROTO. The latter being designed to have fun from Off-road performance as well as providing off-road mobility. The origins of this product, as explained to DLJ, came from a request by a famous Japanese Paralympic athlete. For he loved climbing trails in his Toyota Land Cruiser but wondered if Toyota could come up with something to help him explore a mountain, once he could go no further in his Land Cruiser. The goal is to produce a real production vehicle in a few years time, under the slogan of `mobility for all`. So, this is a hint that we might see something more real at the 2025 Tokyo Mobility Show. This video was filmed in October 2024 at the H.C.R event and also in September of 2022 at H.C.R.
