While leg strength recovers quickly, hands often lag behind. To speed up recovery, more time should be given to hand exercises. Watch now to learn about them and achieve better hand strength. Understanding Hand Muscles: The brain controls different muscles in the hands and joints. Each joint, including the elbow and wrist, has specific muscles that need strengthening. Strengthening the Elbow: A simple exercise to strengthen elbow muscles involves using a light dumbbell (around 2 kg) or a water bottle filled with 1-1.25 liters of water. Sit at a table, rest your elbow on it, and perform controlled repetitions. Start with as many repetitions as you can manage, and increase slowly. Avoid overexertion to prevent stiffness and pain. Strengthening the Wrist: The wrist often lacks movement compared to fingers. First, assess if your wrist moves independently. If it does, rotate it to increase its range. If it does not move at all, use the other hand to assist, but also try engaging the wrist muscles actively. This improves flexibility and mobility. Strengthening the Fingers: Fingers have two types of movements: opening and closing. Many people practice closing movements using a stress ball or springs. However, paralysis patients often struggle with opening their fingers. To strengthen finger-opening muscles, use a small (200-300 ml) water bottle. Hold it lightly and let it fall onto a table. If it's too easy, fill it with water to add weight. Over time, reduce the weight to make the fingers work harder. This strengthens the smaller muscles responsible for opening fingers. Strengthening the Shoulder: The shoulder plays a crucial role in overall hand strength. The best tool for this is a "shoulder wheel", which helps strengthen the entire arm. A shoulder wheel is effective because it engages the fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder in one exercise. Shoulder wheel guidelines: Before using the wheel, ensure you have a strong enough grip. If the grip is weak, first practice gripping exercises. Once ready, use the wheel by rotating it fully. If full rotations are difficult, start with back-and-forth movements to improve range. Over time, increase the movement and difficulty by tightening the wheel’s resistance. Shoulder wheels are available online and can be installed at home. Exercise in the morning as part of a routine. Don’t count repetitions; instead, focus on time and fatigue levels. Stop if pain becomes excessive but continue if it’s manageable. If full rotations are too hard, start with partial movements and gradually improve. By following these exercises regularly, patients can significantly improve hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder strength, aiding in faster recovery.
