Oregon Badllands: Flatiron Rock Trail

Back to the captivating Oregon Badlands and unfinished business! Join us as we pick up the first portion of the enchanting Oregon Desert Trail where we left off a few months ago, at Flatiron Rock Trail, an 11-mile out-and-back trek. Enjoy the ever-present ancient junipers, silvery sage, and sandy paths; plus endless views of the high desert, distant horizons, and snow-covered peaks of the Cascades seen from the top of Flatiron Rock. We shared this trail with a grand total of 3 people and 2 horses; you might say a “wilderness experience” in this amazing state. The 780-mile ODT extends eastward from the outskirts of Bend through the eastern and southeastern Oregon desert, traversing several mountain ranges, to the Idaho border. We hiked the very first portion of this ODT segment in December, starting at the Tumulus Trailhead, continuing on the Black Lava Trail, and turning around at the junction with Flatiron Rock Trail. For today's trek, we hiked the next portion by starting at the Flatiron Rock Trailhead, hiking about 5 1/2 miles to that same junction with Black Lava, then hiking back out again.
