A was a bit apprehensive about testing and reviewing the Hoka Mach 5, mainly because how great the Mach 4 was (and still is) – I didn't want to tarnish the memory of the shoes with a terrible update. Hoka made some significant changes to the shoes, and, quite frankly, I didn't think it was necessary to change the shoes so much. I was wrong. Very wrong. The Mach 5 is so much better than the already absolutely fabulous Mach 4 – it's insane. The PROFLY+ midsole is dreamy and the upper is as good as it's supposed to be; well done, Hoka! \\details Price - $140/£130 (Mach 4 RRP $130/£125) Availability – Available now both in US and UK Weight - 241g/8.6oz (men’s UK size 10/US 10.5) Drop – 5 mm (29mm heel, 24mm forefoot) \\what’s changed? The lovechild of Mach 4 and Mach Supersonic, this lively pavement pounder is built for performance and ready to race. Sporting a stripped back creel mesh upper and lay-flat tongue, the new Mach 5 delivers a snappier ride with PROFLY’s stacked midsole setup, offering a lightweight, responsive foam directly underfoot and rubberized EVA below. The road racer has been transformed with a new lightweight, resilient foam: a responsive rubberised EVA sole for stability, PROFLY+ construction midsole for softer landings, an articulated heel collar, and a stripped back creel mesh upper and lay-flat tongue. Specifically designed for road racing, the versatile HOKA Mach 5 provides optimum support and confidence. \\fit Usual Hoka-tight, single-layer ‘creel jacquard engineered mesh’ upper: lightweight, tight, supportive. Toe box is narrower than Fresh Foam X 1080v12, but I don’t mind it. Tongue is slightly padded to reduce pressure on the top of the foot under the lace cage. Firm heel counter, padded collar and a lovely flared heel tab (a.k.a. ‘Articulated heel collar construction’) for extra support around the achilles. \\midsole It looks like a dual-density midsole, but it’s actually all PROFLY+. Softer foam compound was inherited from the Mach Supersonic and is said to reduce impact force, while the bottom layer (outsole/EVA) is firmer to provide torsion stability and a bit of propulsion. Thanks to the “symmetrical bed of cushion”, the stability is excellent. There is a lot of outsole present, especially around the edges of the sole, so if you’re an overpronator or supinator, rest assured there will be plenty of outsole to wear away. \\toe spring Gradual toe-spring combined with a firmer outsole, perfect for snappy speed sessions, but also accommodating enough for steady-paced runs. \\flexibility The shoes are somewhat flexible, especially under the forefoot area. There is some torsional stiffness – good for intermediate runners to play around with their gait. \\running experience I love Hoka’s shoes and the Mach 5 is an excellent update to the fan-favourite Mach 4. Hoka claims it’s great for beginners and pros alike and that it’s a road racer. I’d say it’s best suited for intermediate to pro runners and maybe not for racing, but tempo and threshold training. The shoes are awesome to run in and provide just enough support to make you feel comfortable, but not too much to feel overpowered. I’ll use these shoes for tempo training when I want a more natural (a.k.a. non-plated) running experience. The flared heel tab hugs the achilles; lovely feeling. \\should you buy it?
