The science behind a revolutionary new way to conduct energy efficiency surveys and treasure hunts. Using inexpensive short-wavelength infrared camcorders, students now survey schools and entire large public buildings in just a few hours. Energy wasting incandescent lighting immediately jumps out in the near infrared images. By contrast, LED's look almost as if they are off, as they don't produce this useless invisible light. This video was filmed in a lab studio setting, observing up close the appearance of known lamps (bulbs) of various types. By applying this science in the field, you can also use short-wavelength IR cameras to map out where efficient and inefficient lighting is in use. In other videos in this playlist, the methods are demonstrated in several locations. The first is the National Gallery of Art, in Washington DC. The first team to pioneer the application of this science to advancing energy efficiency were members of Lowell School's Climate Club: Washington DC middle school students! Filmed at the Infrared Video Studio, Energy Efficiency Lighting Technology Laboratory, California.
