The breathalyser test conducted on the Mayor of Keetmanshoop Melody Swartbooi following her arrest for alleged drunken driving, recorded a reading of 0.72 milligram of alcohol per 1-thousand millilitres of breath. This is above the legal alcohol level limit of 0.37 milligram. This was the testimony of Keetmanshoop Police Traffic Unit member, sergeant Kenneth Sanzila, during the trial of Mayor Swartbooi in the Keetmanshoop Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. The sergeant testified that he and his colleague Inspector Simon Jonas pursued the Toyota double cab bakkie after Swartbooi allegedly failed to stop at a traffic stop sign, on 20 January 2023. According to him, they followed the vehicle until it drove into the police barracks premises, where the suspect eventually stopped. Sanzila said Swartbooi had to be handcuffed and taken to the police station, after she allegedly refused to cooperate with the officers when asked to produce her drivers license. The sergeant further explained that a noted date discrepancy on the calibration certificate and breathalyser test record would have no impact on the alcohol level test's outcome. Swartbooi is set to return to court on 19 May for the continuation of her drunken driving trial.
