Mindfulness is generally referred to as moment-to-moment awareness. The ability to be fully present; aware of what’s going on around us, yet not being overly reactive or overwhelmed by it. By practising mindfulness, you can be “steady while the world spins around you”. Yet, diving a little deeper into the concept, an essential quality of mindfulness is to realise that you can step back and become an observer of the mind and emotions. Mindfulness means to become aware that I don’t have to follow my mind. I don't have to embrace everything that's going on in it as if it is some kind of absolute truth. Real mindfulness is that you pause when you notice that you’re losing control and are heading in a direction that is harmful. You take a time out and you step outside to take a walk, count to 100, perform deep breathing or engage in some meditation. And, in that way you can get yourself in a stable and steady mind state and deal with situations with calmness and clarity. Mindfulness should help us in our lives to seek better outcomes. So, when I’m upset or losing the plot, I should ask myself: is this really going to help me get what I want? Is this going to lead to a good outcome? Is it really going to help? And that is challenging because our mind is pulling on us left, right and centre. Mindfulness is about rising above heightened states of emotion. Thinking with clarity and seeing whether something is in your best interest or in someone else’s best interest. And you are able to step away from confrontation or extreme situations. I hope this session will help you to gain freedom from the turmoil of the mind and use mindfulness to reduce stress and live a meaningful, peaceful and happy life.
