Sera and Noel's wedding party in Novi Sad, Serbia A magyar szöveg az angol után következik, ahol röviden leirom a magyar tradiciókat. Srpski tekst sledi posle engleskog, sa kratkim opisom naših tradicija. What an astounding party we had; full of twists and turns (literally and figuratively). Many thanks for all the guests who came from all over the world: the USA, Norway, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Serbia. For those not familiar with the Hungarian tradition, I will briefly describe what has transpired during the party and different symbolisms. The music was provided by A.N.T. Zenekar. They created a phenomenal atmosphere by playing great ballroom music. There was a wide range of music styles and genres, from a traditional Hungarian czardas (csárdás), many popular songs; the Serbian national dance called "kolo" and a few popular party songs; Italian canzone ("La chante mi cantare", "Buona sera signorina"; English songs such as "Sway", "Hit the road Jack" and even "Pink Panther". Many different dance styles: czardas, shuffle, fox, waltz, tango, beguine, cha-cha-cha, twist, rock'n roll, blues, and a little bit of jazz, too. The Hungarian czardas is played as a medley, starting slow and gradually speeding up, only to finish at very high tempo, that only the young dancers can keep up with. The dance is very simple, two steps to the left, two to the right. As more dancer join, gradually a large circle is formed. Eventually a few couples move to the middle creating many smaller circles, where the most skilled dancers perform a variety of tricks. The violin and accordion carry the melody that is played in legato style. The rythm strongly relies on the bass player playing walking bass and the guitar playing counter rythm. The songs date back many decades and even centuries, and vary from folk songs originating from the poor peasant class, all the way to songs performed in palaces by by the aristocrats. The lyrics are funny, talking about the lives of ordinary people. Most people know the lyrics by heart. This is how Hungarian tradition is passed from generation to generation. There is this unique Hungarian tradition were the bride dances with the guests. Leading to this were a few twists and turns that made the situation even more exciting and dramatic: 1. First, while the groom's father was playing Pink Panther on the saxophone, a little Pink Panther showed up and stole the bride's shoes, preventing her from doing the bride's dance. The best man's job is to negotiate with the thief and pay the ransom. The best man negotiated a fairly steep price of 2 "Million". "Million" is actually a brand of sparkling wine :) (for more detail watch the video) 2. As the party went on, the groom was not keeping a good eye on the bride and she was "kidnapped". The groom had to commence a "search and rescue" operation. He successfully found the bride in the restaurant section of the complex, where she was having a good time with her "kidnappers". Unfortunately for the groom this was not enough to get the bride back. He had to answer a few questions about the bride and play a song to her. That's when he played "Hit the road Jack" on guitar, with the band's and guests' support. Only now the conditions were ripe for bride's dance. The guests line up and the announcer announces who gets to dance with the bride. Typically, each guest gets only 10-20 seconds for this dance. At the end the groom picks up the bride and carries her out into their room. The bride changes from a white to a red dress. White symbolizes purity of heart and soul and devotion to her husband. An innocent girl leaves the room and a woman returns. I express my gratitude to the crew of Restaurant Vidikovac: Srdjan (the manager), the chefs, who made sure that the guests are all well fed with delicious food, the waiters who made sure our glasses were never empty.
