Jesus’ question to Simon Peter still confronts every pastor, shepherd, and ministry leader today: “Lovest thou me more than these?” Before Jesus ever spoke to Peter about feeding His sheep, He spoke to Peter about love. Not love for ministry. Not love for calling. Not love for success, recognition, or results—but love for Christ Himself. Shepherding is not clean or easy work. It can be lonely, bloody, threatening, and often thankless. Many who serve faithfully will never preach a conference, never be publicly celebrated, and may labor in rocky soil where fruit seems fleeting. Some pastor transient communities. Some are bivocational. Some feel limited by what they cannot do rather than encouraged by what they can. And yet, the question remains. If no one notices your success—lovest thou me more than these? If no one appreciates your sacrifice—lovest thou me more than these? If the sheep are difficult, wounded, or ungrateful—lovest thou me more than these? Ministry has never been a profession. It is a calling rooted in loving the crucified One above all else and caring deeply for the people for whom He died. If we do not love the sheep, we must first ask God to deepen our love for Him—because loving Him is what enables us to truly feed His flock. This message is a recalibration for weary pastors, faithful servants, and anyone wrestling with the weight of spiritual leadership. It’s a reminder of why we do what God has called us to do—and for whom. Lovest thou me more than these?
