Exemplifying cool jazz at its best, this group recorded best-selling albums and performed all over the world. This French television performance captures the quartet at its peak, the radiant interplay of its telepathic members shining on such gems as “St. Louis Blues,” “In Your Own Sweet Way” and “Take Five.” This beloved version of the Brubeck quartet had assembled in 1959, the same year that Brubeck scored his biggest commercial successes in the album “Time Out” and its accompanying hit single, “Take Five.” By the time of this 1965 performance, the quartet was airtight, playing as one mind. The very definition of cool jazz, the band practically floats, the quietly swinging rhythm section cushioning Brubeck’s intriguing improvisations and Desmond’s gorgeous, lighter-than-air tones. In fact, Desmond’s lyrical horn was a key factor in the quartet’s popularity, as was his prowess as an occasional composer–“Take Five,” one of the most recognizable songs in the jazz canon, is actually a Desmond tune. And in drummer Joe Morello, the band had one of the most acclaimed drummers of the day; his solo in this broadcast’s version of “Take Five” reveals his wizardry as he skillfully maneuvers his way about the 5/4 time signature that lends the tune its enduring appeal.
