Ohio's Mounds (Indian earthworks) in the Historic Period, presented by Alex Armstrong on 7.11.2023 to the Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio. Hosted by the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, 16062 OH-104, Chillicothe Ohio (https://www.nps.gov/hocu/). Alex Armstrong has a degree from Ohio University and is pursuing his Master's in geography. He is a founding member of the Athens County nonprofit Friends of The Plains Mounds (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?... ). In this presentation Armstrong shares his enthusiastic interest in the interaction between Ohio Indian earthworks and the various ways many of the Indian Mounds have been preserved/and or/ commemorated. While many of the earthworks have been diminished or destroyed, those that remain are among Ohio's greatest treasures. Special thanks to the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park for use of their meeting facility. This presentation was made possible by the Mound City Chapter ( / moundcitychap58 ) of the ASO (Archaeological Society of Ohio , https://www.ohioarch.org/). In existence since 1958, Mound City Chapter holds monthly meetings from March through November. Chapter dues are collected in November for the upcoming year. At most meetings, MCC guest speakers present on area historical and archaeological subjects, particularly related to the Adena and Hopewell cultures and associated artifacts in or near Ross County Ohio. Indigenous American earthworks and artifacts, particularly Hopewell Earthworks in Ohio, have received much attention recently due to World Heritage recognition. Chillicothe Ohio has a rich archaeological heritage and Ross County is generally considered to be the center of the Hopewell Culture (1600-2000 years ago). Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, selected in 2023 for UNESCO World Heritage designation, include: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park including: Mound City Group, Hopewell Mound Group, Seip Earthworks, High Bank Earthworks, Hopeton Earthworks. and Newark Earthworks State Memorial including: Octagon Earthworks, Great Circle Earthworks. and Fort Ancient State Memorial. There are other famous Earthworks in Ohio which may be nominated in the future. In particular, the famous Serpent Mound in Adams County Ohio is on a separate list of tentative nominations and is expected to be the centerpiece of its own nomination in coming years.
