This is the second video (of two) about the little antique atlas sent to me by Kevin at TheWhisperCorner ASMR. Please check out the first video here: • ASMR One Small Atlas (soft speaking, paper... , as well as a new related ramble video in The Junk Drawer playlist, called "The Spies at Memmingen". In this video, we compare some map panels from two pocket atlases published by the same company nearly a century apart. We spend some time at the north and south poles, looking at interesting features on the older map which are not included on the new (and a couple that are). We also compare two maps of Scotland (Bartholemew was a Scottish publisher), and talk a bit about feature density. We close the video with a bit of talk about "the hand of the artist". It is interesting to me how the artist's hand on a work manifests differently in some kinds of art (painting, sculpture, thrown pottery) than others (automotive design, architecture). In the video, I note that I like the "artisan" character of the older atlas, even though there is certainly just as much artistry and cartographic skill on display in the newer. If you're an artist or designer, or just a fan/collector of art/design works, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comment section. What draws you in to a piece of art or design? Do you see the hand of the artist more in some works than others? If so, does that matter to you? 00:00 Intro 04:30 The 1990 Atlas 10:30 Choosing the Maps 14:25 North Pole 19:30 Orienting and Comparing Features 36:47 South Pole 50:50 Scotland 57:57 The Hand of the Artist Please check out my “The Junk Drawer" playlist periodically for new casual videos of behind-the-scenes stuff or extra content.
