Today is all about Pearl Pours. I usually do 1 video per painting, but I thought it would be helpful to put together a compilation of paintings I did recently using my Pearl Pour recipe as examples. In this video, I completely explain how I mix my paints and lay them on the canvas. Because there is no silicone in this recipe, you don't have to worry about cleaning silicone off of your canvas later. I hope this helps you make your own beautiful mess. Fluid art painting AKA flow art or paint pouring, is an abstract, painting process, using liquified paints poured onto a surface. The most common paints used are acrylic paints, mixed with a pouring medium and/or water. There are also ready-made, pouring paints available, at many arts and crafts stores. How long do the paintings take to dry? About 3 days to be touchable and 30 days to cure before they can be varnished. Do you have to use a pouring medium? Yes- some form of pouring medium should be used to help liquefy the paints. Although certain artists are able to only use water, it should be used sparingly. Acrylic paints are water-soluble and will break down when too much water is introduced. A good paint medium will maintain the integrity of the paint’s binders. On a molecular level, the acrylic paint and binder molecules will link together, forming a kind of honeycomb structure when it has fully cured. What are cells? We call the little bubbles of color that pop up cells. When paints are layered, you often cannot see colors that are hiding beneath the top layer. When cells form, those hidden colors break through the surface in lovely patterns. Fluid artists use additives to increase the appearance of cells, such as silicone or specialized recipes and techniques (as featured in this video). They also use heat to help bring the cells to the surface. Cells are a fun part of fluid art, but they are not necessary. There are plenty of gorgeous compositions and techniques that do not include the creation of cells.
