The Oathblade 09/10/2025 The Legend of Zarâk-Thûl: The Oathblade. Chapter I – The Fall of Baraz-Gund. In the dark days after the First War of the Caverns, the halls of Baraz-Gund were overrun by creatures from the depths. Nameless shadows that corrupted stone and metal. The dwarves fought bravely, but were betrayed by a man who had sworn loyalty and then sold the secrets of the hidden passages for gold. The betrayal left deep scars. The dwarves sealed the halls and swore never again to trust the peoples of the surface. Chapter II – The Forge of Durin VII. Centuries later, Durin VII, last of the direct line of the Immortal, had a vision in the flames of the forge. There would come a man of pure heart, fighting alongside the dwarves against an evil that would rise from the north. The vision showed a sword with living runes, glowing green among the flames.Inspired, Durin summoned the master smiths of all seven houses. For seven moons they worked in silence, fusing mithril, obsidian, and enchanted amber. Each strike of the hammer was accompanied by a chant in Khuzdul, and every rune engraved named a lost virtue: trust, honor, redemption. Baruk Khazâd, baruk ai-dûm! Zarâk-Thûl, tharkûn ai-mênu. Ghazâd-ûl, azanulbizar, Thûl ai-khuzd, ai-razan, ai-baraz. Tharkûn-dûm, tharkûn-dûm, Khazâd ai-mênu, ai-dûm, ai-thûl. Zarak ai-fundin, baraz ai-ghâsh, Thûl ai-narâg, ai-khazâd, ai-âmrâ. Ghazâd ai-dum, baruk ai-tharkûn, Zarâk-Thûl, khazâd ai-mênu! Thûl ai-khuzd, ai-dûm, ai-ghâsh, Baruk Khazâd, baruk ai-dûm! Zarâk-Thûl, oath upon us. Forged in Azanulbizar, Blade of stone, of root, of mountain. Eternal oath, eternal oath, The dwarves are upon us, upon fate, upon the blade. Deep stone, mountain aflame, Blade of fire, of the dwarves, of the soul. Forged in fate, axe of the oath, Zarâk-Thûl, the dwarves are upon us! Blade of stone, of fate, of flame, Axe of the dwarves, axe of fate! Chapter III – The Oathblade. The sword was named Zarâk-Thûl, meaning “Oathblade,” not for the dwarves, but for the man who someday would prove himself worthy to wield it. It was kept in the Hall of Fire, wrapped in runic chains that would break only when a man spoke the word of truth in Khuzdul: “Tharkûn-dûm” — I swear by the stone and the blade. Chapter IV – The Day. Evil rose from the north and came upon the land, just as Durin had foreseen. All the peoples of the land suffered, many not knowing the cause. Then a man appeared and asked for Zarâk-Thûl. His name was Elandor, star of the earth, descendant of a line that had been broken. The dwarves watched with suspicion, for another had once laid hands on the stone, yet it had not shone. They decided to hear him and let him enter. Þā Dweorgas ondwīsendon mid twēon; ǣr oðer hæfde hine on stān behrind, ac hit ne scīn. Hīe ræddon hwæþer hīe his word gehȳron and him inlēton.
