Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was a German composer and pianist. He was closely associated with Beethoven - serving as Beethoven's secretary, and later as one of the chief proponents of Beethoven - and he was the first to bring Beethoven's works to London audiences. His life adventures read like a novel - with time spent in Germany, Russia, and England during the Napoleonic wars. Despite his relatively short life, he was a prolific composer with hundreds of works, including 7 symphonies and 9 concertos. As far as I can tell, there were only a few of Ries's works that ever came out during the LP era. Fortunately, later on more of his works came out on CD. His 8th piano concerto is a particular favorite of mine.
