In a country where a rape occurs every four minutes, South Africans reacted with the horror to the brutality of this particular attack. This Tuesday on 3rd Degree, we investigate why it is that men treat women like this, and why it is that only the occasional rape cause such outrage. In the same week that Anene died from her ghastly injuries, two other female bodies were discovered dead on the Cape Flats, yet their deaths hardly caused a stir. Have South Africans become so immune to this epidemic of female abuse, that the rape of thousands of women every year, provokes very little outcry. We ask: What can be done to change men's attitudes to women? And how can this atrocity be harnessed to galvanise communities, parents and the authorities to deal effectively with this scourge.
