Hosted by Project Liberty "Who Owns Creative Work?" was organized by TRANSFER with support from Gray Area. This Virtual Project Liberty Pop-Up delved deep into the ownership of creative work in the AI era, focusing on fractional equity, governance models, and data sovereignty. Our distinguished speakers shared their latest projects, research, and insights that showcase how governance structures and cooperative models can transform not just the creative industries but also offer innovative solutions adaptable to fields such as technology, education, public policy, and healthcare. In her talk, Kelani Nichole highlighted the pivotal role artists play in reimagining value creation and ownership systems around data and technology. She introduced TRANSFER's innovative project—a decentralized, artist-owned archive using IPFS and NAS drives, giving artists full control over preserving and managing their digital artworks. This hybrid cooperative/perpetual purpose trust model aims to collectively hold and distribute the value of artworks to artists, taking on functions such as conservation, IP management, and wealth redistribution. Kelani’s vision is to decentralize cultural value creation, making it more accessible and artist-owned, contrasting with the current concentration of value in museums and private collections. Reach out if you are interested in working with Kelani, she is eager to expand the reach of her project and work with cultural preservation partners.
