Join me on this bright and cloudy morning in the Yorkshire countryside as we walk through the small village of Sancton and visit the ancient and truly unique All Saints Church. If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel    / @walktheworldaway   Sancton is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England and is situated approximately 2 miles of the market town of Market Weighton. It is known to have been a place where Roman mercenaries were billeted to defend their empire against northern tribes or Anglo-Saxon raiders. A cemetery probably founded by the mercenaries was used until around the year 650. Sancton is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Robert Malet. The name derives from the Old English sand-tūn, meaning sand town. Besides being the birthplace of Robert, Samuel and Thomas Jackson who were noted Wesleyan preachers, John Wesley himself preached in the village in June 1788. Sancton has a very special church which was originally built around the 11th or 12th century. What makes this church particularly unique is the 15th century lantern topped tower which is octagonal for the whole of its' height, making it the only one of its' kind in the whole of Northern Europe. A similar tower can be found at Coxwold in North Yorkshire. There are a number of burials and memorials to the Langdale family, the earliest of which dates back to 1408. The Kirkland hand pumped organ, now with blower help, was installed in 1895 and has around 300 pipes.
