PASTOR KARIN takes the time to challenge us to study the Word of God more intently and unapologetically. Not just to muse or gloss over Scripture, she took us through Luke chapter 1, verses 5 to 11, where we began to study the office of the priest. She broke it down and gave us many insights. Here are just a few of the scriptures she covered: Luke 1:5–11 (NIV Translation) 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both well along in years. 8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. In the Old Testament, priests were divided into 24 courses, or groups, and each course served in the temple for one week, twice a year (1 Chronicles 24:1–19). Zechariah, being a priest, would have been part of one of these courses. When it was his course’s turn, he would serve in the temple, including duties such as offering incense. Specifically, a priest like Zechariah would typically: Serve in the temple for one week, twice a year Offer incense twice a day, morning and evening, during his week of service Have specific duties assigned by the High Priest or temple leaders The High Priest was the one who entered the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement, once a year, while regular priests like Zechariah had other roles. Temple layout: Outer court (Gentiles and Israelites) Inner court (priests only) Holy of Holies (High Priest only, once a year) The High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement to make atonement for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16:1–34). This is just a glimpse of the rich teaching from Pastor Karin on the office of the priest. Join us for our upcoming girls’ day as we dive deeper into the Book of Jude. Follow us!
