Twitter & IG @chimezieiii (Music starts at 1:38) Acting as a semi follow up to his 2019 album “Days B4 III”, this mixtape, “Almost There” seems to act as Lucki’s gift to his fans to hold them over before his next studio album which is scheduled to drop this year still. Thematically, this mixtape really feels like an actual mixtape. While the songs are generally good, they don’t possess the highly polished quality to them that was all over “Freewave 3” and “Days B4 III”. This mixtape sounds more like a collection of loosies left off of an upcoming album, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing especially as this body of work has been specifically branded as a mixtape. Even topic wise, the album follows the typical Lucki themes. Lyrics dealing with drug abuse, relationship woes, fame, friendship ties, and cars are heavily referenced throughout this project. There is a strong religious undertone on “Ouch Omen” which is something that I hadn’t heard Lucki dive into too deeply so that was nice and refreshing to hear. Otherwise this is a normal Lucki project theme wise. Lyrically, Lucki also writes and performs in the same fashion that fans know him for. His blunt and relatable lyrics create somewhat of an understanding between him and the listener. The writing really humanizes Lucki and shows the artist as transparent and sometimes even reflective as I see myself in some of the lyrics at times. His flow is creative and on point as always as he has to make sure to fit in with the sonical landscape which proves to be quite experimental at times. Sonically, this is where the mixtape sounds most different compared to his previous projects. While most of his other songs do contain the same ethereal and light atmosphere as displayed on this mixtape, some of the songs here implement these high pitched melodies that sound out of place and throw off the balance of the track. The instrumentals do sound experimental and creative so I do applaud Lucki for continuing to take risks but I do hope that the production is a bit more focused on the next album. All in all, I think this is a good mixtape and contains enough songs to hold fans over until we receive his next studio album. Thanks for reading and watching!
