'Alouette, gentille Alouette' (April 1970) - improvised by Pierre Cochereau aux Grandes Orgues de Notre-Dame de Paris - transcribed by David Briggs (1989) and re-recorded at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, NYC (January 2024). As part of the grateful recognition of the centenary of the birth of Pierre Cochereau I'm very happy to share with you this recording of 'Improvisations sur Alouette, gentille Alouette', a completely mesmerising set of improvisations recorded for the Phillips label at Notre-Dame in 1970, on a disc entitled 'L'Extraordinaire Pierre Cochereau'. This was my very first introduction to the unique Cochereau sound world, as a 10 year old chorister at Birmingham Cathedral, when the brilliant Sub Organist John Pryer lent me this iconic LP, which had only just been released. I remember listening to this record non-stop and my dad questioned whether my headphones were actually surgically attached to my ears. Such was my love for this music that nineteen years later I wrote it down, listening and notating every note, one by one, a process which took approximately 4 hours for one minute's music. I very much hope that you will enjoy the result, filmed just a couple of months ago at St John the Divine, on our temporary Walker Technical Company Digital Organ.
