What Does Arousal Stand for in Sport? #sportspsychology #mentaltoughness #focus #concentration Sport psychologists often study the impact of human arousal (energy) on athletic skill acquisition, development, and performance. General findings reveal there is, in fact, an optimal arousal level (known by athletes as the “zone,” and sport psychologists as flow). Finding the optimal arousal level, however, is an individual pursuit that is unique to each athlete. Put simply, arousal is the level of mental and physical energy that your mind and body will apply to the current task. It goes from deep sleep to panic, and although it is sometimes put down to “your current state of mind” you can learn techniques to alter your arousal level and maximize your athletic potential. What precisely is anxiety? Anxiety is a natural reaction to threats in the environment and part of the preparation for the ‘fight or flight’ response. This is our body’s primitive and automatic response that prepares it to ‘fight’ or ‘flee’ from perceived harm or attack. It is a ‘hardwired’ response that ensures survival of the human species. A state where arousal is counterproductive might occur when you feel too much pressure to do well in an event. This might also be linked with a feeling of anxiety, where you have a perception that a lot is at stake, new skills are required, preparation has not been adequate, or there are issues surrounding the event. A state of a productive amount of arousal might be a situation where you feel you really want to participate in an event and, as such, are looking forward to it.
