In today’s video, I’m drawing a colored pencil portrait of my sister and me — even though this photo technically doesn’t exist. I used AI to generate a reference based on our age difference, and photos I provided, but bringing it to life with colored pencils feels different. It feels real. Like I’m making something tangible out of something imagined. While working on this piece, I talk honestly about perfectionism, artistic freedom, and growing up believing my worth was tied to achievement and how others viewed me. For a long time, if a drawing didn’t feel “perfect,” I would start over. I’ve thrown away more portraits than I’d like to admit. But this one feels different. This video is about unlearning that pressure, trusting my hand, and allowing myself to create without white-knuckling the process.
