I used AI to generate a reference based on our age difference, and photos I provided, but bringing it to life with colored pencils feels different. It feels real. Like I’m making something tangible out of something imagined. While working on this piece, I talk honestly about perfectionism, artistic freedom, and growing up believing my worth was tied to achievement and how others viewed me. For a long time, if a drawing didn’t feel “perfect,” I would start over. I’ve thrown away more portraits than I’d like to admit. But this one feels different.
