Edward of Woodstock (1330–1376), known to history as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of King Edward III and one of the most formidable commanders of the Hundred Years’ War. He earned his reputation early at the Battle of Crécy in 1346, where, still a teenager, he helped shatter the French cavalry with disciplined English forces and devastating longbow fire. A decade later at Poitiers, he achieved an even more astonishing victory, capturing the French king John II. His campaigns in France and Aquitaine displayed bold maneuvering, tactical flexibility, and the ability to inspire fierce loyalty in his troops. Yet he never wore the crown. Struck by illness after years of campaigning, he died before his father, leaving the throne to his young son Richard II. Many later chroniclers viewed him as the greatest king England never had—a warrior prince of charisma and courage whose battlefield brilliance suggested the promise of a powerful reign.
