Music by Samuel Mok Words by Audrey Wong From the musical “Lost and Found · A Legend of Chimes Story” “Purpose” opens with a distinctive piano triplet motif as Evelyn laments her lack of purpose. Evelyn’s struggle is conveyed by two contrasting yet intertwining melodies - the first consisting of stammers and short phrases portraying her helpless cries of desperation, the second being more lyrical and poignant as she pensively contemplates her future life choices. Iris and Astrid soon come over to comfort her: “When there is a will, there is a way”. Astrid’s tender and affectionate melody is accompanied by a harp and a solo flute to describe her comforting presence. Iris takes Evelyn’s melancholic melody in minor and transforms the exact melody into a soaring subject in major, this transformation symbolising that Evelyn’s woes will one day be resolved. The song reaches its peak as Iris and Astrid sing a passionate duet on the soaring melody. The opening piano motif is reprised at the very end with an oboe melodic line before the music fades into oblivion, as Evelyn ponders about her purpose once again.
